Job Requirements
- A high school diploma or its equivalent
- Four years of continuous employment experience
- Post-secondary education can substitute for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis
- Must provide Social Security Number for verification
- Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, must be registered with Selective Service System or have exemption
- Compliance with Florida Department of Transportation's affirmative action and equal opportunity policies
- Ability to pass reasonable suspicion drug testing

Job Qualifications

- Knowledge of highway design concepts, principles, and analytical techniques
- Skilled in engineering production of highway construction plans
- Proficient in computer aided drafting and design tools and office software
- Ability to communicate technical information verbally and in writing
- Ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple assignments
- Ability to establish effective working relationships
- Capability to apply engineering quantitative techniques in highway design
- Problem-solving skills in engineering-related issues
- Competency in using personal computers
- Ability to train and guide junior designers
- Experience working effectively within a team
Job Duties
- Oversees and coordinates the development and preparation of detailed component plans and specifications for signing and pavement markings, signalization, and lighting plans using computer aided drafting and design (CADD)
- Prepares technical highway signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting component plans
- Performs quality assurance and control reviews to ensure compliance with design criteria, policy, and procedures
- Coordinates all major activities related to the design of traffic control devices, traffic signal systems, and lighting systems
- Obtains input from municipalities and other governmental agencies regarding local requirements and ordinances
- Assists in project management tasks including field reviews, data collection, and documentation of customer service requests
- Provides training and guidance to junior designers on design and development processes
- Reviews and maintains shop drawing files
- Participates in technical review committees for consultant acquisition and advisory groups for project delivery methods
- Assists in the development of scope of services and negotiation of staff hours
