Job Description

The Department of Transportation (DOT) in New York City is a vital municipal agency responsible for overseeing and managing the city's vast transportation infrastructure, including all DOT Municipal Parking Facilities. These facilities encompass eight Municipal Parking Garages and thirty Municipal Parking Fields distributed throughout the five boroughs. Job Requirements

  • Currently serving permanently as a Traffic Control Inspector or filed for Civil Service open competitive Exam #3062 for Traffic Control Inspector
  • must possess a valid New York State motor vehicle driver license and maintain it through employment
  • physically able to perform duties including bending lifting walking outdoor work and exposure to vehicle emissions
  • willing to reside in New York City for the first two years of employment
  • ability to work 35 hours per week from Monday to Friday 6am to 2pm
  • ability to attend monthly meetings and legal proceedings as required
  • subject to Office of Management and Budget approval

Job Qualifications

  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of full time experience in vehicular traffic regulation and control or traffic studies
  • or an Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited college with a major in engineering technology urban studies urban planning mathematics or a closely related field
  • or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the above with college credits substitutable at the rate of 30 semester credits per year of experience with at least 6 credits in related fields
  • valid New York State motor vehicle driver license
  • experience with computer database programs such as Access Excel and SIMS preferred

Job Duties

  • Perform site visits and inspections of parking garages and fields to assess their condition cleanliness service and safety
  • identify defects damages or maintenance issues and report to management
  • monitor performance of parking operators to ensure contractual compliance
  • conduct field studies and surveys including lighting conditions parking spaces roadway conditions pedestrian walkways fences abandoned vehicles traffic control devices parking meters ADA compliance and occupancy
  • prepare detailed reports and diagrams of observed conditions and survey results
  • inspect completed work for compliance with established standards and specifications
  • monitor installation or removal of traffic and parking devices such as signs signals muni meters pavement markings and ramps
  • maintain records and databases of parking facility reports and surveys
  • participate in monthly meetings with garage operators to review performance and address concerns
  • investigate and respond to 311 complaints related to municipal parking facilities
  • attend depositions and legal proceedings as required
  • perform other related duties
