Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in tourism business administration marketing advertising or related field
  • 3-5 years related sales or marketing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • successful completion of background check including state and local criminal history check
  • ability to perform moderate physical work including stooping kneeling crouching and lifting 10-20 pounds
  • ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • proficiency in computer use including word processing spreadsheet and database software
  • ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with employees managers and representatives from other departments and organizations

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Tourism Business Administration Marketing Advertising or related field
  • 3-5 years related sales or marketing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • comprehensive knowledge of travel tourism promotional and special event practices
  • strong knowledge of geographic layout of Newport News and attractions
  • proficiency in advertising and marketing principles
  • thorough knowledge of customer service principles
  • skilled in using word processing spreadsheet and database software
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • ability to use judgment and decision-making skills
  • ability to manage time effectively and organize work routine
  • accounting and budgeting skills
  • experience in grant funding and fulfillment

Job Duties

  • Develops and implements strategic initiatives to grow tourism including securing and managing grants
  • builds partnerships and advances projects that enhance visibility and visitor engagement
  • develops strategies to attract visitors and maximize economic impact
  • identifies and updates tourism products and experiences and prepares progress reports
  • oversees visitor services and facilities including supervision of Visitor Center staff
  • manages Virginia Welcome Center relationships and coordinates customer service training
  • administers trolley programming
  • plans and implements programs to promote the Visitor Center and local attractions
  • collaborates with tourism partners and local boards
  • develops and updates products and services and tracks results through reporting
  • represents the City and collaborates with community groups and government agencies
  • performs other duties as assigned
