Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • No experience required
  • TWIC
  • valid passport
  • valid United States driver’s license
  • Requisite STCW certifications
  • Licensed by USCG as Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessel of any Gross Tons Upon Oceans or greater
  • Must pass a USCG physical form 719K
  • Ability to sail during all designated underway periods including training cruises
  • Ability to safely operate industrial equipment
  • Ability to lift moderate weight and navigate confined spaces
  • Must hold valid passport
  • Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in random drug testing
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Compliance with state and federal laws and university policies

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Licensed by USCG as Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessel of any Gross Tons Upon Oceans or greater
  • Possess requisite STCW certifications including Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch and Safety Familiarization
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work with and mentor cadets

Job Duties

  • Performs the duties of an officer in charge of a navigational watch or day work maintenance on deck
  • Stands deck watch when the vessel is in full operational status when in port
  • Performs maintenance on deck equipment and systems as directed by the Captain or Chief Mate
  • Responsible for training students in firefighting, damage control, rescue, and evacuation techniques as a member of an emergency team
  • Assists or directs pilot transfer, anchoring, mooring, gangway, or cargo operations as assigned
  • Responsible for all deck work maintenance and keeping planned maintenance system records
  • Participates in the education and instruction of cadets
  • Acts as a safety observer during evolutions with students
  • Adheres to and trains students in Safety Management System principles and best practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned
