Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
- no experience required
- valid TWIC card
- valid passport
- valid United States driver’s license
- requisite STCW certifications
- licensed by USCG as Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessel of any Gross Tons Upon Oceans or greater
- ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
- proficiency in all aspects of Bridge Navigational Watch-Standing (OICNW)
- pass USCG physical form 719K
- pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment
- participate in random drug testing plan
- ability to sail during all training cruises and shipyard periods
- ability to safely operate industrial equipment including hydraulic cranes and deck machinery
- physical capability to lift or move moderately heavy objects, step through hatches, climb ladders, work in close spaces, and wear personal protective equipment
- ability to work in various weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and dry environments
- compliance with state and federal laws/codes and university policies
- security-sensitive position
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
- licensed by USCG as Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessel of any Gross Tons Upon Oceans or greater
- possess requisite STCW certifications and endorsements including Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch and Safety Familiarization and Basic Training
- proficiency in bridge navigational watch-standing (OICNW)
- good computer skills including basic proficiency in MS Word and Excel
- excellent organizational, managerial and supervisory skills
- strong communication skills
- ability to work with and mentor cadets
- proficiency in ECDIS and paper chart navigation, voyage passage planning, weather reporting, and GMDSS/VHF radio communication
Job Duties
- Operate as officer in charge of navigational watch (OICNW)
- perform day work and maintenance on deck equipment and systems
- stand deck watch during vessel operation in port
- train students in firefighting, damage control, rescue, and evacuation techniques
- assist or direct pilot transfer, anchoring, mooring, gangway, or cargo operations
- maintain planned maintenance system records
- assist in vessel security
- participate in education and instruction of cadets without interfering operational duties
- act as safety observer during student evolutions
- adhere to and train students in Safety Management System principles and best practices
- perform other duties as assigned
