Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be in good physical health with or without accommodations
  • Ability to pass engineer licensing requirements and rules examinations
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work weekends, nights, holidays, and relief assignments
  • Ability to work in Michigan City, Hammond, Gary, or Chicago
  • Valid motor vehicle license and reliable transportation
  • Pass drug test, physical examination, and background check
  • If previously employed by a railroad, provide evidence of furlough or eligibility to be rehired

Job Qualifications

  • Experience operating heavy moving machinery preferred
  • Good physical strength and endurance

Job Duties

  • Clean and disinfect interiors and exteriors of passenger railroad cars
  • Inspect, move, couple, and uncouple passenger cars at terminals
  • Refill water tanks on cars
  • Conduct safety tests and perform inspections
  • Make minor repairs and perform preventive maintenance
  • Perform duties as assigned by supervisors
