Job Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age or older
- Hold a current First Aid and CPR certification
- Must have understanding of strokes and techniques in the assigned area of instruction
- Must be able to be in the pool area for extended periods of time
- Must be able to communicate verbally to groups and individuals in and out of the pool area
- Must be able to lift and assist swimmer in and out of the pool
- Ability to hear sounds of distress
- Demonstrate swimming skills to support swim team member development
Job Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Prior experience working in aquatics and supervision of others
- Demonstrate strong people skills, organizational and administrative skills
- Experience in program development, working with volunteers, financial development, and customer service
- Certifications in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen
- Preferred Certified American Red Cross or YMCA lifeguard
- Preferred American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification or equivalent with LGI certification required within 90 days
- Preferred Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor (YSLI), or previous experience teaching group swim lessons
Job Duties
- Directly coach at least one primary training group at the YMCA Aquatic Center location and handle all needs of that group including practices, swim meets, and special events
- Assist Head Coach and Aquatics Administration with planning, implementing, scheduling, and evaluating all swim team groups
- Recruit volunteers and assist with training when necessary
- Assist with coordination of parent volunteers, concessions, and fundraisers
- Supervise swimmers before, during, and after swim team practices and events to ensure proper behavior and safety
- Complete incident reports and other paperwork in a timely manner
- Maintain positive working relationships with fellow staff and members of all ages and backgrounds
- Remain current in the field through certifications and training
- Attend and take leadership roles in event management at hosted swim meets and other events
- Respond appropriately and proactively to member concerns and assist in retention and engagement of members
- Build effective, authentic relationships with community partners, parents, program participants, neighboring swim teams, and YMCA’s
- Maintain knowledge of industry trends and required coaching credentials as determined by YUSA, NEO League rules, and Akron YMCA policies
- Consistently apply emergency procedures, safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the aquatic area
- Attend all staff meetings, trainings, and league meetings as required
- Promote and represent the mission and core values of the Akron Area YMCA Association
- Perform all other duties as assigned
