Job Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16
  • must be able to demonstrate required swim skills as per YMCA standards
  • current YMCA Swim Lesson Certification or equivalent or ability to obtain prior to start
  • current YMCA/American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent or ability to obtain prior to start
  • current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification or ability to obtain prior to start
  • current AED certification or ability to obtain prior to start
  • current Basic First Aid certification or ability to obtain prior to start
  • current Emergency Oxygen certification or ability to obtain prior to start
  • ability to work with people of all ages and abilities
  • effective communication skills
  • ability to remain physically active including swimming and lifting up to 50 pounds
  • ability to respond calmly and quickly in emergency situations
  • willingness to adhere to YMCA policies and procedures

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 16
  • must be able to demonstrate the required skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • perform the Lifeguard certification pre-test and the four core swim strokes
  • must have current certifications including but not limited to YMCA Swim Lesson Certification, YMCA/American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen or ability to obtain prior to starting
  • ability to work with and relate to people of all ages and abilities
  • ability to communicate with staff and participants in a clear, concise manner
  • ability to handle questions, complaints, and concerns from staff, members, and participants in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner
  • must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the YMCA even while working under potentially stressful conditions
  • must be able to enforce YMCA rules firmly when necessary and make sound decisions to ensure safety and well-being of members, guests, facilities, and equipment

Job Duties

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly that meet the needs of the participants
  • communicates and builds effective relationships with swimmers and parents
  • communicates information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers swimmers and parents to other programs as appropriate
  • responsible for the safety of the participants in their classes and acts immediately and appropriately in the event of an emergency
  • responds immediately to emergency situations in accordance with Red Cross and YMCA policies and procedures
  • performs equipment checks and ensures equipment is available, and tests the pool to ensure chemical levels are as they should be
  • ensures all patrons adhere to all guidelines and rules set in the West Cook YMCA Member Handbook
  • maintains records as required such as attendance, progress reports, incident and accident reports, chemical logs, first aid equipment log, etc.
  • attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled
  • adheres to all West Cook YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures including emergency and safety procedures
  • ensures a safe space by preparing program space, storing all class equipment, and notifying Associate Director of any damaged equipment
