Job Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Ability to demonstrate required swimming skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • Successful completion of the lifeguard certification pre-test and competence in four core swim strokes
  • Possession of current certifications including YMCA Swim Lesson Certification, YMCA/American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, Emergency Oxygen or willingness to obtain before employment
  • Effective communication skills with staff and participants
  • Ability to handle questions, complaints, and concerns professionally
  • Motivation to actively contribute to YMCA culture even under stressful conditions
  • Ability to be firm in enforcing rules and ensuring safety
  • Physical ability to instruct and observe strokes
  • Capability to remain in water for extended periods and enter water frequently
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and warm/humid conditions

Job Qualifications

  • Current certifications including YMCA Swim Lesson Certification, YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen or ability to obtain before starting
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to relate to individuals of all ages and abilities
  • Capacity to handle stressful situations professionally
  • Ability to enforce safety rules and make sound decisions to protect participants and facilities

Job Duties

  • Instruct swim lessons according to YMCA guidelines
  • Prepare lesson plans tailored to participant needs
  • Communicate effectively with swimmers and parents
  • Ensure safety of participants during lessons
  • Respond immediately to emergencies following Red Cross and YMCA protocols
  • Perform and document equipment and pool chemical checks
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations
  • Maintain accurate records such as attendance and incident reports
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions
  • Prepare and store class equipment and report damaged items
