Job Requirements
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Register with Selective Service if male born after December 31, 1959
- Proficient in written and spoken English
- Subject to background and security investigation
- Complete an online onboarding process with acceptable identification documents
- Participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program as a requirement for VA Health Care Personnel
- Serve a 1-year or 2-year trial period during which performance and conduct will be evaluated
- Must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement
- Comply with VA policies including credentialing, suitability, and fitness processes
- Provide required application documents such as resume, transcripts, and certifications as applicable
Job Qualifications
- United States citizenship
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
- At least one year of experience as an RDN/RD at the GS-11 equivalent level
- Demonstrated knowledge of standards to assess staff compliance and implement performance improvements
- Skill in establishing goals, evaluating accomplishments and solving problems
- Skill in applying nutritional knowledge to ensure menus meet nutrition standards
- Ability to utilize Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines
- Ability to serve as a food operations expert providing technical guidance and staff development
- Ability to supervise subordinate staff including planning, organizing, delegating, directing, controlling and reviewing activities
- Ability to analyze data for resource allocation
- Experience with menu planning, recipe development and Computrition preferred
- Knowledge of human resource management principles
- Experience leading lower graded staff in a food service setting
- Experience with budget planning and implementation
Job Duties
- Serves as professional and technical advisor to staff and other health care professionals
- Represents the food operations section on projects, committees and/or workgroups within the department and the facility
- Assumes full responsibility for planning, directing, and assessing the work and competence of subordinate staff
- Develops procedures and guidelines for food operations and coordinates policies with clinical nutrition management and other services
- Monitors compliance with regulatory standards, policies, and procedures
- Participates in performance improvement efforts and completes internal audits and kitchen inspections
- Leads action planning to attain goals and resolve deficiencies
- Implements the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) program ensuring food quality and safety standards
- Evaluates food operations for proper resource allocation and devises solutions to improve patient satisfaction
- Participates in patient test tray programs and ensures menus meet nutritional and budgetary requirements
- Assesses technological equipment innovations and recommends purchases
- Builds contingency plans to ensure continuity of food operations during emergencies
- Manages emergency feeding cache and ensures compliance with facility and The Joint Commission requirements
- Executes training programs for staff and assists with new employee onboarding
- Collaborates with clinical nutrition staff to integrate nutritional care plans
- Performs other duties as assigned appropriate to the grade and assignment
