Job Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt
  • Subject to satisfactory background investigation and fingerprint check
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period unless previously served
  • Federal payments must be made by direct deposit
  • Must successfully pass E-Verify employment verification
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing with negative result
  • Subject to one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable
  • Willing to live and work in remote, volatile, and unpredictable locations
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience required

Job Qualifications

  • Possess FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land ratings or current FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land rating
  • Possess current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate or military equivalent with Multi-Engine and Instrument Airplane Instruction ratings
  • Possess current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
  • Minimum flight time of 1500 hours with 250 hours as Pilot-In-Command
  • Minimum flight time of 500 hours in multi-engine airplanes
  • Minimum flight time of 500 hours in Category and Class to be flown (Airplane - Multi-engine)
  • Minimum 75 hours performing Night Flight
  • Minimum 75 hours PIC time of actual or simulated Instrument time with 10 hours in flight
  • Minimum flying time in Category of 100 hours in the preceding 12 months
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience required
  • Ability to provide supporting documentation such as flight logs to verify flight hours and certification

Job Duties

  • Develops and coordinates the Regional INFRARED aircraft pilot fire and aviation training program based on performance requirements, standardization and training needs
  • Assists in administering agency-wide aviation programs such as in-service aviation standardization and training
  • Manages content and methodology of national aircraft pilot training and evaluation programs to meet fire and aviation goals
  • Provides information on aviation accident prevention concepts and behavioral trends
  • Maintains proficiency in agency aircraft models/types used for Forest Land Management or administrative needs
  • Plans extended flights by analyzing weather conditions, avoiding unfavorable weather, and considering alternate routes and destinations
  • Plans the work for the unit, assigns tasks to employees, and establishes production or quality standards for work
