Job Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period unless previously served
  • Federal employees required to have federal payments made by direct deposit
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing with negative results
  • Subject to one-year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience is required
  • Willing to live and work in remote and unpredictable locations

Job Qualifications

  • Must possess an FAA Airplane Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land ratings or a current FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Instrument and Airplane Multi-Engine Land rating
  • Must possess a current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate or military equivalent with Multi-Engine and Instrument Airplane Instruction ratings
  • Must have a current FAA first or second-class medical certificate
  • Must possess minimum flight time of 1500 hours with 250 hours as Pilot-In-Command
  • Must have minimum flight time of 500 hours in multi-engine airplanes
  • Must have minimum 75 hours performing night flights
  • Must have minimum PIC time of 75 hours of actual or simulated instrument time with 10 hours in flight
  • Must have prior wildland firefighting experience
  • Must attach complete documentation for all flight times and certifications

Job Duties

  • Develop and coordinate the Forest Service Regional infrared aircraft pilot fire and aviation training program based on performance requirements, standardization and training needs
  • Assist in the administration or oversight of agency-wide aviation programs such as the in-service aviation standardization and training programs
  • Assist in managing the content and methodology of centralized national aircraft pilot training and evaluation programs to assure national fire and aviation goals and objectives are met
  • Provide information for aviation accident prevention concepts and behavioral trends and integrate these into agency program goals and objectives
  • Maintain proficiency in agency aircraft models/types utilized to meet Forest Land Management Objectives or administrative needs
  • Plan extended flights including analysis of present and future weather conditions, avoidance of unfavorable weather, and consideration of alternate routes and destinations
  • Plan work to be accomplished by the unit, assign work to employees, and establish production or quality standards for the unit's work
