Job Requirements

  • Valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record
  • Ability to pass employer-paid pre-employment physical and drug screening
  • Ability to pass Federal Motor Carrier and Department of Transportation physical requirements
  • Possession or ability to obtain a School Bus Driver's Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Physical ability to perform duties including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, pushing, and climbing
  • Ability to maintain insurability
  • Availability to attend and successfully complete required training programs if license and certificate are not yet obtained
  • Willingness to work at least one year in the position or reimburse training costs if SCOE provides training
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Experience operating school transportation vehicles preferred

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • One year of experience in school student transportation or completion of a school bus driver training program preferred
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and California Motor Vehicle Code provisions related to school transportation
  • Ability to maintain appropriate student behavior and manage challenging situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Capability to maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and students
  • Valid Class B Operator's License with required endorsements preferred
  • Possession of a School Bus Driver's Certificate from the California Highway Patrol including first aid certification preferred
  • Ability to pass physical and drug screenings as mandated by employers and Federal Department of Transportation
  • Strong knowledge of safety and maintenance requirements for bus and pupil transportation equipment

Job Duties

  • Drive a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule
  • Research school transportation routes and report unsafe road conditions
  • Transport students to and from specified sites and on special event trips
  • Load and unload students safely at designated sites and during trips
  • Plan, organize, and implement student safety and vehicle evacuation drills
  • Maintain bus or transportation vehicle in a clean and orderly condition
  • Inspect and report mechanical defects or malfunctions
  • Adhere to policies for maintaining appropriate student behavior
  • Respond to public contacts concerning transportation issues
  • Complete daily transportation activity records including number of students transported and mileage
  • Sweep, clean, and refuel buses
  • Transport children with special learning needs and physical handicaps as required
  • Administer first aid when necessary and notify appropriate personnel in cases of serious injury or illness
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
