Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of sterile processing experience
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols
  • Proficient in computer-based tracking systems
  • Certification as Central Service Technician within 90 days
  • Ability to lift and handle weights of 30 to 35 pounds
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergent situations
  • Must be vaccinated for Hepatitis at hire
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids anticipated
  • Ability to maintain a contaminant-free work area

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year experience in sterile processing department
  • Ability to operate sterilization equipment proficiently
  • Certified Central Service Technician within 90 days of hire
  • Strong communication skills
  • Computer literacy for tracking system documentation
  • Ability to follow established procedures and protocols
  • Experience with biological, chemical, and mechanical sterilization validation
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and on-call as required

Job Duties

  • Wear proper protective attire when performing decontamination
  • Follow established procedures to ensure decontamination is complete and correct
  • Set up decontamination equipment for operation and ensure proper function and continuous workflow throughout the shift
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area at all times
  • Report improper equipment operation to clinical engineers, red tag equipment, and document on the shift report
  • Clean and disinfect equipment and work area at completion of shift
  • Handle infectious waste according to established hospital procedure
  • Examine and ensure surgical instrumentation components are clean and functional prior to assembly
  • Test all instrumentation for correct function according to procedures
  • Electrically test instrumentation with insulation coating each time processed
  • Assemble instrument sets according to count sheets in Censitrac system
  • Follow manufacturer instructions to package and wrap trays/items for sterilization
  • Run test cycles for sterilizers including biological and Bowie-Dick tests
  • Validate and document sterilization cycles using biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators in Censitrac
  • Scan items into sterilizers and label processed items correctly
  • Position items properly in sterilizers to ensure sterilization
  • Include biological challenge packs in relevant loads
  • Observe and interpret sterilizer cycle data, scan strips into Censitrac and document results
  • Initiate recall and notify manager if load fails standards
  • Place sterile items in appropriate areas for distribution sorted by department
  • Receive supplies ensuring no external contamination
  • Complete and log case carts for operating room preparation
  • Assist with cleaning storage areas and work stations
  • Assure items are dry before assembly and use Tyvek pouches for single instruments
  • Run daily biological tests for sterilizers
  • Assist with daily workflow adjustments and quality control observation
  • Report equipment malfunctions and fill work orders
  • Act as liaison between SPD and other departments
  • Assist in inventory maintenance and paperwork
  • Present quality improvement action plans
  • Monitor and report process improvements
  • Help precept new staff and students
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers and customers
  • Document appropriately using Censitrac and shift reports
  • Collaborate to prioritize and complete workloads
  • Perform independent functions and support team decisions
