Job Requirements

  • Completion of the eighth grade
  • one year of similar or related work experience
  • possession of a Class B Temporary Driving Permit with an N endorsement at hire
  • ability to obtain a Class B license with N endorsement within 90 days of hire
  • submission of Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Driver's transcript at hire
  • ability to lift or push in excess of 50 pounds
  • ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • ability to operate multiple types of heavy and light equipment
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • demonstrated ability to work safely
  • ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public

Job Qualifications

  • Completion of the eighth grade
  • one year of similar or related work experience
  • knowledge of reading, writing, arithmetic
  • knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions with equipment
  • knowledge of equipment components, parts, operation and maintenance
  • basic mechanical skills such as changing oil and lubrication
  • knowledge of Florida traffic laws
  • ability to deal courteously with the public
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • ability to lift or push in excess of 50 pounds
  • ability to establish effective working relationships
  • ability to maintain professional demeanor
  • ability to drive equipment in heavy traffic

Job Duties

  • Cleans storm water facilities
  • cuts weeds
  • cuts and chips small trees and bushes
  • removes aquatic plants
  • removes spoils, beaver dams and other debris
  • completes written daily accounting of cleaning activities and equipment used
  • maintains storm water facilities
  • puts up erosion control devices
  • repairs filters, headwalls, spillways, fencing
  • fills and lays sandbags
  • performs mowing, weeding, raking, fertilizing, and mulching
  • completes written daily accounting of maintenance activities and equipment used
  • operates equipment including dump truck, crew trucks, bush chipper, bushhog, slope mower and positract, stump grinder
  • operates light equipment such as power mower, power pruner, weedeater, chainsaw, power packer, power auger, concrete mixer
  • uses non-power equipment like sling blades, shovels, rakes, bush axes, post hole diggers
  • maintains and repairs equipment including oiling mowers, replacing mower and trailer tires, repairing minor equipment problems
  • fuels and oils dump trucks and crew trucks
  • greases backhoe, priestman, chipper, dragline
  • serves as lead worker and may supervise non-DOC personnel inmate or community service workers
  • completes reports on work performed, material and equipment used
  • ensures tasks are completed safely
  • assists in directing traffic for loading/unloading equipment
  • assists in securing and un-securing heavy equipment before and after transport
