Job Requirements

  • Culinary degree or equivalent professional training
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive culinary experience
  • current valid SERVE-Safe Certification
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • ability to work full-time including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • ability to stand for extended periods (6 to 8 hours)
  • ability to lift 25 to 30 pounds regularly
  • ability to work in person in Berkeley, CA

Job Qualifications

  • A culinary degree or equivalent professional training
  • minimum of 3-5 years of progressive culinary experience
  • excellent verbal and written communication in English
  • active listening and dynamic flexibility
  • critical thinking and ability to multi-task
  • demonstrated expertise in preparing international cuisines and accommodating diverse dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free)
  • possession of current valid SERVE-Safe Certification
  • strong knowledge of food safety standards, kitchen management, and inventory control
  • intermediate computer skills
  • experience managing and motivating diverse kitchen staff
  • excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills

  • ability to lead and direct in a unionized environment

Job Duties

  • Supervise, mentor, and train kitchen staff
  • document unsatisfactory work performance and participate in progressive disciplinary measures as warranted
  • schedule staff and assign tasks to ensure smooth and efficient service
  • support staff development through training in culinary techniques, safety practices, and customer service
  • participate in employment interviews and make hiring recommendations
  • oversee kitchen operations including food preparation, production, and service
  • manage food inventory, purchasing, vendor relationships, and cost controls to maintain budget targets
  • ensure compliance with health, safety, sanitation, handling, and storage of food and equipment
  • directly supervise food preparation, cleaning and cutting of raw foods, spice mixing, seasoning, frying and roasting operations
  • be responsible for food orders in conjunction with the Head Chef
  • train staff and ensure high standards for menu execution, food preparation, recipe adherence, presentation, and kitchen operations
  • plan and execute daily menus, special events, and culturally diverse meals
  • develop seasonal and themed menus emphasizing freshness, nutritional balance, and global traditions
  • assist in designing and executing catering menus
  • collaborate with Events and Catering teams to execute internal and external event services
