Job Requirements

  • Certification as a Sommelier or a degree in Hospitality is beneficial
  • Previous experience as a Sommelier, Wine Steward, or in a hospitality role
  • Extensive knowledge on wines and regions of the different types
  • Knowledge of local vineyards and wineries
  • An understanding of the wine making process
  • Must abide by the brand standards pertaining to uniform requirements
  • All employees must maintain good personal appearance including clean fingernails, being clean-shaven, and wearing slip resistant black shoes
  • Maintain personal health and sanitation standards including washing hands when using restroom
  • Be honest, trustworthy and respectful
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Be flexible in regard to schedule
  • Demonstrate sound work ethics
  • The physical demands include regularly lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds, frequently lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear and taste or smell
  • Ability to tolerate varying conditions of noise level, temperature, illumination and air quality
  • Understand that the work environment can be loud and occasionally expose employees to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat
  • Must have normal sense of smell, touch, and sound
  • Is consistently at work and on time
  • Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent
  • Arrives at meetings and appointments on time

Job Duties

  • Keeps inventory and orders wine to replenish stock
  • Stores wines on racks or shelves in wine cellar to inventory and ensure accurate retrieval of orders
  • Meets with winery representatives and tastes wines to select for wine list
  • Maintains wine list and recommends bottle or individual glass prices
  • Recommends guests wine pairing with their dinner
  • Discusses wines with guests and assists guests to make wine selections
  • Knows up-selling techniques
