Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • experience leading or coordinating a team in food service or culinary operations
  • valid food safety certification or willingness to obtain
  • ability to work standing for extended periods and lift objects up to 30 pounds
  • willingness to work in warm and noisy kitchen environments
  • availability to comply with MCCS background and security checks
  • male applicants born after 1959 must be registered with Selective Service
  • ability to adhere to safety and sanitation policies
  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • ability to use kitchen equipment safely and competently

Job Qualifications

  • ability to direct work activities of a mixed occupational crew
  • ability to plan and coordinate daily assignments to meet mealtime deadlines
  • knowledge of food characteristics to judge freshness and proper cooking
  • ability to instruct lower-graded cooks on cooking procedures
  • knowledge of kitchen equipment operation and maintenance
  • knowledge of safety and sanitary requirements per Navy Medical regulations
  • certification or willingness to maintain food safety certifications such as ServSafe
  • physical capability to perform kitchen duties including lifting and standing
  • strong communication skills to provide clear instructions and customer service
  • experience in food preparation in a commercial or institutional setting

Job Duties

  • serve as a working leader of three or more employees in cooks and food service roles to complete snack bar operations
  • assign tasks to crew members based on supervisor instructions and ensure availability of recipes, supplies, and cooking utensils
  • maintain daily documentation of food preparation amounts, leftovers, and discard records
  • order supplies and ingredients needed for daily menus and resolve discrepancies
  • oversee work progress and compliance with procedures, methods, and deadlines
  • prepare a variety of menu items including regular and special diet entrees and desserts
  • operate kitchen equipment and ensure food safety and sanitation standards are met
  • assist in inventory count and reconciliation
  • provide customer service including assisting customers, solving problems, and communicating positively
  • enforce safety, housekeeping, and food rotation standards
  • report workplace hazards and incidents promptly
  • comply with equal employment opportunity and harassment prevention policies
  • perform additional duties as assigned
