Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Four years of relevant sign making experience
  • Journey level proficiency in sign making trade
  • Skill in computer software related to sign making
  • Ability to operate sign-making tools and measuring instruments
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
  • Effective communication skills
  • State driver’s license in good standing
  • Class B CDL within 90 days of hire for DCA employees
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical work including lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Willingness to work at heights and in various physical positions
  • Ability to wear personal protective gear
  • Availability for hold-over and recall for emergency services
  • Subject to background security investigation

Job Qualifications

  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in sign making trades
  • Journey level knowledge of and skill in sign making to design, layout, and produce signs
  • Skill in using computer for sign layout and lettering
  • Skill in using sign-making equipment, software, and tools
  • Skill in operating precision metal handling equipment to meet fabrication and installation requirements
  • Ability to analyze data and information including blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
  • Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speaking
  • Skill in computerized work order and time attendance systems
  • Knowledge of federal and state requirements for regulatory signs (preferred, IAD only)
  • Knowledge of striping procedures and equipment (preferred, IAD only)

Job Duties

  • Designs and fabricates informational and regulatory signs and markings for airport buildings, offices, equipment, vehicles, roadways and grounds
  • Uses various graphic arts and sign-making equipment, including design software, RIPs, large-format printers and plotters, laser engravers, and various finishing hand tools for preparation of signs
  • Designs, lays out, and fabricates signs based on work orders, specifications, drawings, or oral instructions
  • Determines style, dimensions, letter size, color, spacing, margins, grammar, and abbreviations to achieve clarity, a pleasing effect, and good eye appeal
  • Fabricates traffic signs and stencils for roadway markings in accordance with federal and state regulatory specifications
  • Produces completed lettering using a sign-making computer for application to sign surfaces
  • Maintains inventory of materials, assesses stock levels, and contacts vendors to obtain price information
  • Assigns tasks and provides instruction to Structures employees assigned to sign work
  • Cleans work area, tools, and equipment on completion of assignments
  • May paint or assist in painting interiors and exteriors of airport structures, roads, runways, and equipment (IAD only)
  • May assist in vehicle repair and painting and special projects (IAD only)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
