- graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of an approved high school equivalent certificate
- one year of experience in general unskilled kitchen or food service work
- ServSafe certification
- valid food handlers certificate
- possession of a valid New Jersey driver’s license if vehicle operation is necessary for job duties

Job Duties
- act as a general assistant in kitchen, bakery, cannery, dining room, cafeteria, or other food service units
- serve special diets according to prescribed portions control guides set by dietitian
- wash, scrub, pare, hull, core, and prepare vegetables, fruits, and berries for cooking or serving using manual or power driven equipment
- assume responsibility for certain phases of food preparation and cooking when assigned
- assist in cutting meat and baking
- maintain kitchen and service areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition
- lead in serving food from steam tables and arranging trays
- deliver food to dining rooms and assign delivery employees
- take lead in food service
- assist in preparing salads, desserts, and beverages
- set tables, change linens, count dishes, linen, and silverware
- ensure timely and efficient food transport and delivery
- oversee dishwashing and cleaning of kitchenware
- wash and polish ranges, roasters, broilers, milk cans, and other equipment
- polish stainless steel equipment
- receive, check, weigh, measure, issue, and prepare records and inventories of food supplies and equipment
- utilize electronic or manual recording and computerized information systems as required
