Job Requirements

  • graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of an approved high school equivalent certificate
  • one year of experience in general unskilled kitchen or food service work
  • ServSafe certification
  • valid food handlers certificate
  • possession of a valid New Jersey driver’s license if vehicle operation is necessary for job duties

  • ability to communicate effectively in English or through American Sign Language or Braille

Job Duties

  • act as a general assistant in kitchen, bakery, cannery, dining room, cafeteria, or other food service units
  • serve special diets according to prescribed portions control guides set by dietitian
  • wash, scrub, pare, hull, core, and prepare vegetables, fruits, and berries for cooking or serving using manual or power driven equipment
  • assume responsibility for certain phases of food preparation and cooking when assigned
  • assist in cutting meat and baking
  • maintain kitchen and service areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition
  • lead in serving food from steam tables and arranging trays
  • deliver food to dining rooms and assign delivery employees
  • take lead in food service
  • assist in preparing salads, desserts, and beverages
  • set tables, change linens, count dishes, linen, and silverware
  • ensure timely and efficient food transport and delivery
  • oversee dishwashing and cleaning of kitchenware
  • wash and polish ranges, roasters, broilers, milk cans, and other equipment
  • polish stainless steel equipment
  • receive, check, weigh, measure, issue, and prepare records and inventories of food supplies and equipment
  • utilize electronic or manual recording and computerized information systems as required
