Job Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • six months of experience cooking a variety of foods in a large commercial or institutional setting or completion of an approved culinary arts education program
  • working knowledge of policies and procedures of a large scale kitchen operation
  • working knowledge of operation and care of institutional kitchen equipment
  • ability to write legibly
  • ability to read and interpret recipes, instructions, production schedules, scales and other graduated measuring devices
  • ability to perform simple arithmetic computations
  • ability to meet the physical standards of the job
  • ability to stand for long periods of time and to work in a warm, humid environment
  • ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, other medical center employees, visitors, and the general public

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • six months cooking experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen or completion of an approved culinary arts education program
  • working knowledge of large scale kitchen operation policies and procedures
  • working knowledge of institutional kitchen equipment operation and care
  • ability to write legibly
  • ability to read and interpret recipes, instructions, production schedules, and measuring devices
  • ability to perform simple arithmetic
  • ability to meet physical job standards
  • strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships

Job Duties

  • Prepares and cooks a variety of food items including more difficult and specialized dishes
  • prepares pastries such as pies, rolls, breads, and cookies
  • prepares complex items for special diets including low sodium and diabetic meals, tube feedings, and baby formulas
  • modifies and adjusts recipes according to number of persons served
  • cleans and washes dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • regularly takes and records temperatures of food items and reports results to supervisor
  • maintains high sanitation standards in food preparation and storage to comply with regulatory agencies
  • performs other related duties and uses new improvements or technology related to job assignment
