The U.S. National Park Service (NPS), a federal agency committed to conserving natural and cultural resources, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher. This role plays an essential part in maintaining public safety and security within some of the most well-known national landmarks and natural parks across the country, including Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota and Indiana Dunes National Park in Indiana. Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required
  • appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication
  • meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
  • participate in direct deposit electronic funds transfer program
  • submit to drug testing and maintain negative drug test results
  • hold a valid driver’s license
  • submit Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and driving records from all states
  • wear National Park Service uniform and comply with uniform standards
  • meet minimum age requirements for the respective parks
  • provide transcripts if qualifying by education
  • submit all required documentation by application deadline
  • physically able to work sedentary, high stress environment with shift work
  • manual dexterity sufficient to operate computer terminals and maintain logs
  • able to communicate clearly and effectively

Job Qualifications

  • At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 level in federal service
  • operating radio communication equipment to dispatch services
  • receiving incoming telephone or alarm system calls
  • experience as a receptionist or similar administrative position
  • bachelor’s degree with 120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours from an accredited institution
  • combination of education and experience meeting specialized experience requirements
  • at least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 level for GS-06 grade
  • operating Computer-Aided-Dispatching system
  • operating Multi-function Telephone System
  • using dispatch recording devices and alarm monitoring systems
  • experience with NCIC, NLETS, and state public safety systems
  • maintaining logs and files of law enforcement complaints and reports

Job Duties

  • Independently make judgments and decisions to handle emergency telephone calls
  • record information
  • determine priority of response
  • relay incident information to responding law enforcement Rangers and public safety units
  • operate multi-channel radios and telephones for park communications and cross-net radio operations
  • operate public safety computer networks including NCIC and NLETS for inquiry, entry, and record modification
  • coordinate emergency medical response incidents with local county public safety offices
  • relay critical information to first responders
  • monitor activities of law enforcement Rangers and public safety field personnel
  • assist in coordinating prompt response to incidents in progress
