Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in animal care in veterinary hospital, animal shelter, humane society or other animal care facility
  • Ability to perform physical tasks requiring lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in various temperature and environmental conditions
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays and attend mandatory training
  • Ability to communicate effectively with public and staff
  • Valid driver’s license may be required for occasional driving duties

Job Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in animal care in a veterinary hospital, animal shelter, humane society, or similar facility
  • Demonstrated ability to perform assigned tasks
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning and disinfectant procedures
  • Knowledge of animal care and safe handling skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions
  • Ability to keep accurate records and use computerized systems
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Effective communication skills both verbal and written

Job Duties

  • Perform animal care duties such as preparing food, feeding and providing water, cleaning and disinfecting food and water bowls
  • Clean and disinfect animal areas including sweeping, mopping floors, cleaning walls, beds, cages and pens
  • Meet, greet, and interface with members of the public visiting the shelter
  • Assist in matching animals to potential adopters and provide information on animal behavior, pet ownership, and shelter operations
  • Monitor animals daily and note any physical or behavioral changes, assist veterinary staff with vaccinations and minor treatments
  • Keep records on animal disposition, daily habits, counts and report inconsistencies to supervisors
  • Complete records and forms in the animal management system
  • Assist in inventory management for food and supplies
