Job Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • one half year to one and a half years of combined general and specialized food preparation experience depending on the cook level
  • experience which shows knowledge of quantity cooking including ingredient preparation, safe food handling, measuring and combining ingredients, and use of kitchen utensils and equipment
  • ability to adjust recipes and estimate cooking times
  • willingness to participate in training and meet USDA training requirements
  • part-time experience pro-rated
  • submission of verified documentation for temporary assignments where applicable

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • work experience preparing and cooking food demonstrating knowledge of quantity cooking principles
  • ability to follow standardized recipes and adjust yields
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
  • experience in inventory control and record-keeping
  • ability to supervise and train food service helpers
  • effective communication and teamwork skills
  • completion of annual USDA-required training hours

Job Duties

  • Plans, coordinates and works closely with other food service employees to ensure meals are prepared in a timely manner to meet meal service times and/or satellite delivery schedules
  • reviews daily, weekly, monthly food production records and adjusts cooking and preparation plans
  • accurately weighs and measures ingredients according to standardized recipes
  • prepares, cooks and heats various foods including sandwiches, breakfast meals, and other menu items
  • sets up serving counters, serves students and staff, replenishes food items
  • portions and directs portioning and packing of menu items for satellite meals
  • cleans and maintains work areas and dining areas in a sanitary manner
  • properly labels, stores or disposes leftover foods and documents accordingly
  • receives provisions, documents product temperatures, reports discrepancies, stores goods properly, and assists in inventory management
  • directs and instructs cafeteria helpers and other assistants, and may supervise serving operations at satellite schools
  • attends staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training
  • achieves annual required training hours outlined by USDA
