Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, or related field
  • two years of experience conducting safety program activities including safety audits, inspections, and investigations
  • must possess a valid New Jersey driver's license
  • professional safety certifications desirable

  • two years of experience conducting safety program activities, including safety audits, inspections, and investigations
  • experience working in a public transit system preferred
  • knowledge of bus and rail transit systems safety
  • knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations
  • knowledge of current occupational safety and industrial hygiene standards
  • knowledge of principles and practices of accident investigation programs
  • extensive knowledge of 49 CFR Part 659
  • knowledge of proper use of safety equipment and current trends in personal protective equipment
  • knowledge of current techniques and methods used in the hazard analysis process including job hazard analysis
  • knowledge of fire/life safety principles
  • knowledge of principles and practices of construction safety
  • knowledge of regulatory agency administrative, reporting, and record keeping requirements
  • skills in developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures
  • skills in conducting investigations, analyzing data, and identifying and recommending corrective action
  • skills in using discretion and judgment with operational issues and problems
  • skills in using a personal computer and applicable software applications such as Microsoft Office
  • skills in reading and interpreting technical information and contracts
  • skills in maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding sensitive material
  • skills in conducting oral presentations and relaying technical information in understandable terms
  • ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce
  • ability to perform other duties of similar nature and level as assigned

Job Duties

  • Implements and monitors occupational health and safety program activities including facility inspections, accident investigations and emergency planning operations
  • monitors program compliance with mandated laws, rules, and regulations
  • provides technical safety information and compliance requirements to management staff, employees, and contractors
  • provides support with safety audits, inspections, and testing in the areas of fire/life safety, safety certifications, and transit operations on facilities, operating divisions, construction sites, work practices, equipment, and safety devices
  • assists with the Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) program safety oversight of contractors and construction projects as required
  • may represent the agency in internal and external safety meetings and committees to provide comprehensive technical advice and assistance ensuring accuracy of accident/injury reporting and current or new applicable laws and regulations
  • researches and tracks safety regulations to develop departmental safety policies and procedures and ensures their implementation
  • assists with incident and accident investigations involving the public, contractors, and employees which involve New Jersey Transit personnel and/or property, determines the cause and provides solutions and reports as required to regulatory agencies
  • assists with the preparation of internal and external reporting requirements
  • maintains records and develops reports on new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness
  • prepares statistical reports as required
