Job Qualifications

  • one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level performing duties such as safety inspections, accident report preparation, investigation support, and informal training
  • successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level education in safety or occupational health fields or closely related disciplines totaling at least 24 semester hours
  • combination of education and experience equating to 100 percent of total requirement
  • superior academic achievement in a qualifying curriculum
  • for GS-9 level, one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 level including leading incident reviews and serving as a safety manager
  • successful completion of a master’s or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of higher-level graduate education in relevant fields
  • combination of education and experience totaling 100 percent of all requirements
  • for GS-11 level, one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 level including advising management and developing safety standards
  • three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent
  • combination of graduate education and specialized experience equaling 100 percent of requirements

Job Duties

  • assisting in safety and health inspections of facilities or operations to determine compliance with applicable safety and occupational health standards
  • preparing reports of findings or analysis of mishap trends
  • assisting an investigation team in securing accident details, causal factors, witnesses, or reports
  • providing informal safety and health training to managers, supervisors and/or employees
  • applying safety and occupational health methods and practices to conduct standard safety inspections
  • leading and/or participating in after action Incident reviews or facilitated learning analyses
  • conducting surveys to identify and evaluate hazardous work operations and conditions
  • serving as a collateral duty safety manager in a field office
  • conducting and/or organizing safety training in the field or classroom
  • advising and supporting management, supervisors and employees in implementing safety program, participating in or developing an organization’s safety and risk management program
  • developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards
  • organizing, leading and/or participating in accident Investigations, after action reviews or facilitating learning analyses
  • developing a positive safety culture through employee education and engagement
  • training workers, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects
