Wheelhouse personnel play a crucial role in the everyday operation and safety of maritime vessels, particularly those involved in towing operations. These individuals are responsible for supervising the safe and efficient operation of their crew, vessel, and tow, ensuring that all equipment is maintained in optimal condition and that operational standards and company policies are strictly followed. Job Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • must have a U.S. Coast Guard license as Master Operator, uninspected towing vessels, endorsed for service on inland waters
  • hold a valid personal radio license issued by FCC
  • radar observer certificate
  • must attend an Advanced Pilot Management (APM) course every 5 years

Job Duties

  • Responsible for routine maintenance and operation of all machinery aboard the vessel and tow and ensure that it is in good operating condition
  • ensure the tankermen check the barge pump engines for fuel, oil, water and antifreeze
  • advise the office of anticipated crew shortages or overages immediately to enable timely manning adjustments among the fleet
  • instruct every crewmember to be respectful and professional towards all people at fleets, docks, locks etc
  • set the watch standing schedule for the wheelhouse and crew, ensuring compliance with watch standing regulations
  • post station bills and muster cards and ensure crewmembers are familiar with their emergency stations and duties
  • complete all required training, disciplinary action forms, evaluations, and other personnel-related documentation
  • report all injuries or illnesses of crewmembers occurring on vessel
  • set the safety culture on the vessel and ensure compliance with the Company Safety Program and training requirements
  • conduct monthly drills and safety meetings in accordance with company policies and procedures
  • report all accidents, spills, or damages on company vessels or tows
  • ensure reporting of damage resulting in cargo loss, contamination, spills or pollution
