Job Requirements

  • must be at least 15 years old at time of hire
  • must obtain a work permit if under 18
  • current tuberculosis test
  • must pass a physical examination
  • must pass a background check including fingerprinting
  • ability to swim 50 yards using front crawl or breaststroke without stopping
  • ability to tread water for 2 minutes without support
  • ability to retrieve a 10-pound object from 6 feet underwater within required time
  • willingness to work varied schedules including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Job Qualifications

  • must be at least 15 years old at time of hire
  • must obtain a work permit if under 18
  • possession of a current american red cross lifeguard certification and cpr for the professional rescuer certificate is required at the time of appointment
  • current title 22 first aid for public safety personnel certificate within 1 year of appointment
  • ability to perform swimming and rescue skills including swim-tread-swim sequences
  • availability to attend all scheduled lifeguard training class sessions
  • strong communication and observational skills
  • ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions

Job Duties

  • maintains constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and assists patrons in distress
  • enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by city policies
  • performs emergency procedures when needed and administers first aid as necessary
  • completes appropriate reports and forms as necessary
  • helps with the swim lessons program and the swim team program during the summer season by teaching lessons and/or lifeguarding
  • participates fully in lifeguard training classes and skills tests
  • works under the general supervision of recreation supervisors or coordinators
