Job Requirements

  • Two years of experience in the implementation of recreational, social and cultural programs and services directly related to the assigned area of responsibility
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in recreation, or a closely related field
  • Ability to obtain an Oregon Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • Must pass a background check
  • Valid First Aid, Youth/Child/Adult CPR, Lifeguarding Certification or ability to obtain Red Cross Lifeguarding certification within three months of hire

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in the implementation of recreational, social and cultural programs and services directly related to the assigned area of responsibility
  • One year experience as lead/manager role preferred
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in recreation, or a closely related field
  • Ability to obtain an Oregon Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • Valid First Aid, Youth/Child/Adult CPR, Lifeguarding Certification or ability to obtain Red Cross Lifeguarding certification within three months of hire
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of developing and implementing recreation programs
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Strong skills in supervision, training, and performance evaluation
  • Proficiency with modern office procedures, record-keeping, and computer equipment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in budgeting and marketing programs preferred

Job Duties

  • Develops, organizes, schedules, implements, supervises, evaluates, and enhances program activities and services in assigned areas
  • Provides program coverage as needed, adjusting to fluctuating responsibilities based on the needs of program participants and city demands
  • Develops, coordinates, and teaches, leads, and provides lifeguarding services for assigned recreation classes and activities, such as swimming and fitness classes, children's, teen or senior programs, specialized recreation or outdoor recreation classes and special events
  • Provides instruction on proper use of facilities and monitors the use of equipment
  • Schedules recreation classes and program activities for Aquatics
  • coordinates major scheduling issues with programming staff and/or supervisor
  • Responds to emergency situations as required, administering first-aid and CPR, and contacting emergency medical authorities immediately
  • Assists with long-range planning and the development of program goals and objectives in line with departmental and community needs
  • Supports or Responsible for the selection, supervision and evaluation of assigned staff
  • assigns work and ensures appropriate training is provided
  • investigates complaints
  • recommends and administers disciplinary actions
  • handles sensitive personnel matters and recommends grievance responses
  • exercises full supervision over employees
  • Promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion by implementing diversity work plans

  • Markets and promotes programs and services through various media channels, including flyers, social media, and partners with department marketing team
  • Assists with program budget development and monitoring, maintains accurate records, collects program survey data and generates expenditure reports
  • creates manuals, handouts, and updates center procedures as needed
  • Purchases and maintains necessary equipment and supplies
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners to coordinate balanced programs and special events
  • may serve on City committees and task forces
  • Monitors program compliance with regulations
  • provides front desk support as needed and oversees maintenance of assigned facilities and equipment
  • May manage contracts with external contractors in coordination with Recreation Office Coordinator as necessary
  • May require the use of City owned vehicles to travel to multiple Recreation sites
  • Performs related and other duties as assigned
