Job Requirements

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license depending on assignment
  • Valid California Class B license with passenger endorsement if driving mini-bus or van, obtained within six months of employment
  • Drug testing required for drivers per Department of Transportation regulations
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required for sailing/kayaking/stand-up paddle boarding program assignments
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and travel as required
  • Ability to perform physical activities in outdoor environments
  • Completion of City of Ventura application and supplemental questionnaire
  • Willingness to undergo background checks and screenings

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in team sports or outdoor recreation for Recreation Leader positions
  • Experience in community program coordination or specialized area for Recreation Specialist
  • CPR and First Aid certification for water sports assignments
  • Valid California driver’s license appropriate to assignment
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work with diverse age groups and backgrounds
  • Physical ability to perform activities for extended periods

Job Duties

  • Provide site supervision or act as an attendant monitoring and overseeing youth and adult sporting events including basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, and flag football
  • Assist with scorekeeping, scheduling, communication with staff and participants, cash management and related reports
  • Provide on-site supervision, instruction, and support with sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding special events and activities
  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of necessary equipment for water sports
  • Coordinate after school youth enrichment activities at school sites or community centers including homework assistance, sports, games, special programs, and curriculum development
  • Provide program and facility support for arts and cultural programs including customer service, clerical duties, scheduling and event support
  • Teach hands-on education programs and facilitate historic tours at city’s historic sites
  • Support volunteer program operations including hosting volunteer projects, maintaining database, and volunteer outreach
  • Assist with senior nutrition program including meal preparation, volunteer training, and clerical support
  • Provide facility supervision including setup and breakdown of tables, equipment during rentals and city events
  • Provide tour transportation and participant assistance as a licensed bus driver when required
