Job Requirements

  • Two years of experience in the implementation of recreation activities or programs
  • Completion of college level courses in Recreation, Social Services, Physical Education or a closely related field is desirable
  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Maintenance of a good driving record
  • Successful enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job including working in office and outdoor recreation facility settings, standing or sitting for prolonged periods, and occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds
  • Legal right to work in the United States

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of procedures for implementing planned recreation and community service activities through community participation
  • Knowledge of program content for specialized community recreation activities
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR methods
  • Knowledge of personnel management principles, practices, and techniques including methods for employee selection, supervision, evaluation, and training
  • Knowledge of community service agencies, organizations, programs, and activities
  • Knowledge of techniques of effective recordkeeping and report writing
  • Knowledge of common recreational and social needs of various age groups
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, supervise, and direct overall recreation and community service activities and programs
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and direct citywide recreation activities
  • Ability to conduct assigned portions of programs and activities
  • Ability to select, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time and volunteer staff
  • Ability to effectively communicate with juveniles and adults from diverse backgrounds, ages, and interests
  • Ability to involve community residents in the use of facilities, activities, programs, and services
  • Ability to serve as staff liaison, coordinator, and director
  • Ability to prepare and present comprehensive oral and written reports
  • Ability to identify methods to maximize service effectiveness and efficiency
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public groups, agencies, school officials, and the media
  • Ability to understand community needs and evaluate activities accordingly
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing

Job Duties

  • Assist in the development, organization, and coordination of city-wide recreation activities and services
  • Promote and conduct community participation in city recreational activities and events
  • Develop community relations outreach activities working with neighborhood groups to determine recreation interests and needs
  • Respond to public inquiries about recreation programs
  • Work effectively with school officials, government agencies, local organizations, and businesses
  • Create work schedules and supervise part-time staff
  • Monitor and supervise program participants
  • Recommend seasonal programs and events
  • Organize large and small special events
  • Publish, conduct, and evaluate recreation programs, special events, and activities
  • Coordinate contract class programs
  • Prepare and justify budget requests
  • Prepare and present a variety of oral and written reports
  • Maintain a variety of records and files
  • Provide formal and informal instruction to program participants
  • Monitor and enforce safe use of all recreational facilities
  • Represent the department at meetings, seminars, and conferences
  • Work closely with city maintenance staff and other divisions and departments
  • Assist with citywide events and other programs as needed
  • Adhere to work schedule Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with possible irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call status
