Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, public administration, or related field
  • Minimum of three years experience in recreation program planning and management
  • Ability to supervise full-time, part-time, and contract employees
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Proficient in computer applications including word processing and spreadsheets
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift and move light to moderate weight
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, public administration, or related field
  • Experience planning and overseeing community recreation programs
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills
  • Knowledge of recreation programming and facility management
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets
  • Experience with marketing strategies and public outreach
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Familiarity with applicable laws and regulations related to recreation services

Job Duties

  • Plan, organize, and implement goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for city-wide recreation services
  • Organize, direct, and evaluate recreation programs including contract classes, trips, senior programs, after-school programs, day camps, special events, teen activities, youth and adult sports, and aquatics
  • Assign, schedule, and supervise part-time, contract, and full-time staff
  • Evaluate current programs, staff, and facilities
  • develop comprehensive plans for future department needs
  • Review program and budget expenditures and assist in developing division budget
  • research and prepare specific justifications
  • Evaluate program attendance, participant responses, and cost
  • make recommendations regarding program continuance or cancellation and create new programs
  • Schedule, coordinate, and direct assigned city recreation facilities
  • Inspect recreation areas and facilities to ensure safe use of equipment
  • Participate in long-term planning to assess future recreation needs
  • Research new operational techniques and methods
  • make recommendations for purchase or implementation
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies
  • Prepare bid specifications for recreation equipment and other items
  • select recreation employees
  • develop and establish work methods and standards
  • conduct or direct staff training and development
  • review and evaluate employee performance
  • initiate disciplinary actions
  • Work with organized community groups and committees to promote and organize programs
  • act as a Recreation and Family Services Department representative with school district officials
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and workshops to stay informed on recreation trends and management techniques
  • Conduct special studies as assigned
  • Ensure maintenance and scheduling of department vehicle fleet
  • Represent the city at business and civic gatherings
  • Attend meetings and act as lead in the absence of the Director
  • Perform related duties as required
