Job Description

Job Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Leisure Services, Facility Management, Public Administration, or related field
  • Three to five years of professional-level year-round recreation work experience including programming and coordinating recreational activities or related management experience
  • Valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date
  • Must obtain CPR, AED, and First Aid certificates within 30 days of hire
  • For Aquatics assignment, must complete Red Cross Lifeguard Training and related instructor certifications within specified timelines
  • For Adaptive Recreation assignment, required to possess nationally recognized certification in Therapeutic Recreation, Department of Economic Security fingerprint clearance, Article 9 certification, and Protective Behaviors Certification within 30 days of hire
  • Subject to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as per City policy
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Leisure Services, Facility Management, Public Administration, or related field
  • Considerable professional experience of 3-5 years in year-round recreation work including program coordination and special event management or sports facility operations
  • Experience as a City of Mesa Recreation Programmer is acceptable
  • Valid Class D Arizona Driver's License
  • Certifications appropriate to assignment such as CPR/AED and First Aid within 30 days of hire
  • Preferred certifications include Lifeguard Training Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), and Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
  • Membership in professional associations like Arizona Parks and Recreation Association and National Recreation and Parks Association is desirable
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Familiarity with registration and reservation software systems

Job Duties

  • Manage planning, budgeting, organizing, marketing, scheduling, directing, coordinating, and supervising a range of recreation programs and facilities
  • Oversee multiple assignment areas or recreation-related activities as needed
  • Coordinate and supervise special events hosted by the City and community groups
  • Manage the promotion and presentation of recreation programs, special events, and related activities at parks, pools, playgrounds, and centers
  • Participate in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating recreational staff and volunteers
  • Develop and implement program budgets, recommend fees, and monitor programs, services, and facilities
  • Prepare reports and maintain records
  • Collaborate with community, schools, and partner agencies
  • Use computer applications for registration, scheduling, and reporting
  • Provide internal education and community presentations
  • Enforce facility and program rules and regulations
  • Coordinate facility rentals and equipment use
  • Manage public fee assistance and scholarships programs
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and policies
