Job Requirements

  • Valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date
  • Obtain Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification within 30 days of hire for aquatics assignments
  • Obtain Lifeguard Training Instructor and Water Safety Instructor certificates within 90 days for aquatics
  • Subject to FBI vetting process for aquatics assignment
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certificate within 30 days of hire for recreation center and tennis assignments
  • Possession of Therapeutic Recreation (CTRS) certification by promotion or hire date for adaptive assignment
  • Department of Economic Security fingerprint clearance card level 1 within 30 days of hire for adaptive
  • Department of Economic Security Article 9 certification and Protective Behaviors Certification within 30 days for adaptive
  • Subject to pre-employment alcohol, drug, and controlled substance testing per city policy
  • Two years’ experience as a City of Mesa Recreation Programmer OR equivalent education and experience.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Leisure Services, Facility Management, Public Administration, or related field
  • Three to five years of professional, year-round recreation experience including program coordination
  • Experience in parks and recreation or special event management and operations
  • Experience in sports facility management including sales, marketing, scheduling, and contract management
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Municipal recreation experience preferred
  • Membership in Arizona Parks and Recreation Association preferred
  • Membership in National Recreation and Parks Association or related certification preferred
  • Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED certification preferred for aquatics assignments
  • Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certifications preferred for aquatics
  • Therapeutic Recreation (CTRS) certification preferred for adaptive programs.

Job Duties

  • Manage planning, budgeting, organizing, scheduling, marketing, directing, coordinating, and supervising recreation programs and facilities
  • Coordinate and supervise staff including full-time, part-time, temporary agency workers, and volunteers
  • Manage adaptive recreation and inclusion support programs including assessment, coordination, and communication with schools and agencies
  • Oversee athletics programs including leagues, clinics, officials management, field reservations, and marketing
  • Coordinate aquatic programs, staff training, facility rentals, cash handling, and customer relations
  • Manage front desk operations including hiring, training, and supervising staff, system administration for ActiveNet, fee assistance, and fiscal audits
  • Coordinate and supervise recreation center staff, programs, facility rentals, special events, fitness and wellness activities, and reporting
  • Organize and supervise special events including permits, vendor contracts, equipment management, resource coordination, and public safety
  • Coordinate youth camps, mobile recreation opportunities, volunteer services, program development, marketing, scheduling, and monthly reporting
  • Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Prepare reports and program evaluations
  • Ensure compliance with department policies and procedures
  • Participate in recruiting, training, and evaluating recreation personnel.
