Job Requirements
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License
- American Red Cross First Aid, CPR/AED certification obtained within the first three months of employment and maintained throughout employment
- For aquatics-related program areas, certifications including American Red Cross Basic First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and First Aid for Safety Personnel (Title 22)
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as frequent heavy manual labor, standing for long periods, bending, squatting, and lifting up to 75 pounds
- Some assignments may require evening, weekend, or other shift work
- Must be willing to serve as an Emergency Disaster Worker as required by city and state code
Job Qualifications
- Two years of college coursework in recreation, leisure services, or a closely related field
- Two years of experience in the field of recreation, leisure services, or a closely related field, preferably equivalent to a Recreation Specialist
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of implementing programs specific to assigned recreation activities
- Knowledge of practices and principles of first aid, aquatics safety, and CPR lifesaving
- Ability to coordinate a variety of recreation programs
- Experience working with diverse populations and maintaining an inclusive environment
Job Duties
- Plan, organize, implement, and lead assigned recreation program areas and facility operations
- Direct the work of assigned part-time, temporary, contract, limited-duration, and volunteer staff
- Provide lead direction in assigning and scheduling program work
- Program and oversee contract services
- Train subordinate staff and volunteers in program activities and ensure compliance with safety procedures
- Provide input on program effectiveness and participation and make recommendations for improvements or modifications
- Review work area and ensure it is safe and appropriate for all employees and participants
