Job Requirements

  • Currently employed as a dispatcher by a public safety agency
  • Completion of probation in current dispatcher role
  • Minimum one year experience as a dispatcher
  • Possession of a California P.O.S.T. certificate
  • Valid five-minute typing certificate with 45 words per minute and no more than five errors issued within the last six months
  • Ability to undergo and successfully pass a thorough police background investigation
  • Willingness to complete psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, medical examination, and drug screening
  • Ability to work in an office environment with prolonged sitting and wearing headsets

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current employment as a public safety dispatcher
  • Successful completion of probation with at least one year experience
  • Possession of a California P.O.S.T. certificate
  • Ability to operate communication equipment proficiently
  • Strong multitasking and decision-making skills
  • Valid five-minute typing certificate with 45 words per minute and minimal errors

Job Duties

  • Operate radios, telephone and alarm signal communications equipment
  • Receive and evaluate incoming emergency and administrative calls
  • Elicit and record incident information from callers
  • Determine priority and dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment
  • Maintain radio contact with field units and coordinate emergency services
  • Keep command personnel informed of emergency status
  • Maintain communication records and update files and maps
  • Test communication equipment and report malfunctions
  • Assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Communications Supervisor
