The City of Lompoc Parks and Recreation Department is actively seeking dedicated and seasoned individuals for the position of Head Lifeguard. The department operates within the Community Development sector of the city and provides a wide range of recreational opportunities to residents of Lompoc, California. Job Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Ability to work a varying schedule including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Must pass pre-employment medical examination
- Must pass criminal background check and fingerprinting
- Physical ability to perform heavy work including lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds
- Visual acuity sufficient for job duties
- Ability to hear oral instructions and distress signals in an aquatic environment
- Maintain calm and good judgment in stressful and emergency situations
- Effective oral communication skills
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure
- Must be able to model professionalism and good customer service skills
- Must have no lapses of consciousness and remain alert at all times
Job Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of experience as a lifeguard or equivalent
- Current possession of California Driver's License
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Certification in Basic Life Support (Professional Rescuer CPR/AED) and First Aid
- Certification in First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22)
- YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent
- YMCA Lifeguard Supervisor course or American Red Cross Lifeguard Management course or equivalent
- Preferred YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification or equivalent
- Knowledge of lifesaving and swimming principles and practices
- Knowledge of first aid principles and safety rules for Aquatic Centers
- Ability to lead and train personnel
- Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups
- Ability to perform arithmetic calculations and maintain records
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and public
Job Duties
- Lead and participate in program operations to ensure safety and well-being of patrons and personnel
- Train, develop, and direct lifeguard staff
- Assist in developing strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals
- Monitor lifeguards and other assigned part-time personnel on duty
- Educate public and staff on facility policies and procedures and address patron concerns
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports as required
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment availability
- Check pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival
- Perform chemical testing and take appropriate action
- Assist Recreation Supervisor in drills, assessments, and in-service training
- Work with Pool Clerks in daily cash balancing of fees
- Perform lifeguard duties as needed
- Assist in Recreation Division activities and special events
- Participate in regular staff meetings and training
- Perform other duties as assigned
