Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • completion of the City's junior lifeguard program
  • ability to obtain Ocean Lifeguard I certification
  • ability to obtain and maintain CPR certification for the professional rescuer
  • ability to obtain and maintain Advanced First Aid or EMT I certification
  • for Ocean Lifeguard II and above, possession or ability to obtain a California driver’s license
  • successful completion of swimming performance test
  • successful completion of oral board interviews
  • background investigation including live scan and criminal history check
  • successful completion of pre-employment physical exam and TB test
  • attendance at the USLA Ocean Lifeguard I Academy
  • ability to work temporary part-time hours during the summer season
  • ability to work in outdoor beach environments and variable ocean conditions

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • completion of the City of Pismo Beach junior lifeguard program
  • knowledge of ocean, weather, surf, beach, and environmental conditions
  • familiarity with first aid practices, terminology, and techniques
  • ability to perform CPR and use lifesaving medical equipment, including defibrillators and radio equipment
  • understanding of municipal codes and ordinances regarding beaches and parks
  • knowledge of applicable federal and state laws including state boating laws
  • effective oral and written communication skills
  • ability to interpret and apply laws, codes, and ordinances
  • capability to provide basic life support and emergency medical care
  • proficiency in documenting and reporting incidents
  • sound judgment and decision-making skills in emergency situations
  • ability to work well with the public, staff, and government agencies
  • maintain physical fitness for rescue operations

Job Duties

  • Patrol and observe beaches, bluffs, parks, and water to monitor swimmers and watercraft
  • avert potential accidents through communication and proactive safety contacts
  • perform water rescues using swimming, paddling, and lifesaving skills
  • provide first responder medical emergency care, including CPR and trauma aid
  • assist paramedics with advanced life support
  • provide general assistance, information, and instruction to the public regarding beach and water safety
  • receive, respond to, and resolve inquiries and complaints from the public
  • enforce city beach ordinances related to animals, alcohol, and public gatherings
  • identify illegal activities and issue warnings
  • call police backup support as necessary
  • respond to beach-related emergencies involving dangerous marine life
  • clean, service, maintain, and perform minor repairs on equipment and facilities
  • monitor upkeep of lifeguard towers and emergency equipment to ensure readiness
  • participate in educational training on advanced lifeguarding techniques, medical aid, and departmental procedures
  • study and understand local ocean, surf, weather, beach, and environmental conditions
  • maintain clear and accurate documentation of incidents and activities
  • maintain physical endurance, strength, and agility during all duties
  • establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, public, and government agencies
