Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks management or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in recreation or special events coordination
  • Ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, walk, run, pull, lift, grasp, hear, see close up and far away, communicate effectively
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Willingness to work days, nights, and weekends as required
  • Ability to pass a KBI criminal background check
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks management or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in recreation or special events coordination
  • Knowledge of special event coordination, management and implementation
  • Experience with organizing and directing volunteers
  • Strong supervisory and managerial skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with the general public, administration, city leaders, community organizations
  • Ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously
  • Ability to manage the physical demands of the position
  • Ability to work nights and weekends
  • Must pass a KBI criminal background check
  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license
  • CPR/PR/First Aid/AED certification preferred or must be obtained within first 6 months of employment

Job Duties

  • Plan and implement a variety of Oaklawn special events and programs including holiday programs, festivals, camp outs, youth and adults day programs
  • Assist the Program Supervisor in large scale Derby special events
  • Partner with community businesses and organizations to implement city-wide events
  • Research, develop and implement new events for the Oaklawn community
  • Represent Derby Recreation Commission at special events
  • Oversee planning and implementation of after school program and summer recreation programs
  • Manage volunteers for Oaklawn special events
  • Manage vendor relationships including sourcing quotes and bids
  • Work closely with administration and community leaders to coordinate events
  • Prepare and manage annual budgets and capital improvements for special events and youth programs
  • Hire, train and supervise youth recreation staff and instructors
  • Operate Derby Recreation Commission vehicles and equipment for events
  • Complete reports and presentations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Attend additional training and education relevant to the position
