Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated mechanical skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Proficiency with basic math calculations
  • Ability to operate instrumented control systems and PC-based applications
  • Willingness to work non-normal business hours including shift work and weekends
  • Ability to respond calmly and professionally to emergency situations
  • Strong problem solving skills and bias for action
  • Ability to keep accurate records and convey information
  • Interest in continuous learning and ability to operate multiple pilot plant processes
  • Ability to follow safety and work permitting procedures
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with team members and external contractors

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associates degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Demonstrated mechanical skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Instrumentation and/or electrical skills preferred
  • 5 years of experience in a technical lab, production, maintenance or utilities environment preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications and ability to operate chemical processes with computer controls
  • Familiarity with distributed control systems preferred
  • Ability to read and modify technical drawings preferred
  • Familiarity with federal health and safety regulations for chemical industry desired

Job Duties

  • Operate various pilot plant chemical processes and wastewater treatment and utility systems in accordance with standard operating and safety procedures
  • Record detailed operational data on operator run sheets and in laboratory log notebooks
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of unexpected operations and participate in root-cause analysis of unplanned events
  • Develop basic understanding of process control systems and communicate issues to the pilot plant engineer
  • Perform analytical quality control tests such as capillary rheometry, percent solids analysis, pH, etc
  • Participate in commissioning and start-up activities for new processes and projects
  • Provide emergency backup, vacancy and vacation coverage for boilerhouse operations when necessary
  • Respond correctly to emergency situations following standardized procedures
  • Train new employees on shift
  • Utilize mechanical skills to construct new units and repair and improve various equipment systems
  • Participate in 5S activities and other pilot plant and boilerhouse work area improvements
  • Identify and communicate department maintenance needs
  • Ensure that safe work permitting process is followed including permits and inspections
  • Operate the site's utilities including water tube boilers, steam generators, air compressors and dryers, secondary cooling water processes, chillers, wastewater holding cells, boiler chemical feed systems, and water quality monitoring
  • Perform preventative maintenance and services on boilers and steam distribution/support systems
  • Complete chemical analyses on waste and boiler water
  • Participate in Responsible Care REACTS process after normal business hours
  • Participate in the department's monthly safety meeting and act as safety advocate
  • Perform safety inspections and identify safety hazards or concerns
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analyses, Management of Change, Pre Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations and contribute to closure of action items
