Job Requirements

  • Licensed as a commercial pilot and rated for the type of aircraft assigned
  • Minimum 1,000 hours pilot in command
  • Minimum 200 hours in the single engine land aircraft used by SCFC
  • Minimum 5 hours in make and model of aircraft assigned
  • Current Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot certificate
  • Current Second Class Medical Certificate
  • Current flight review
  • Ability to obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal
  • Pass criminal background check and drug test
  • Possess valid driver's license
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and work in extreme temperatures
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel overnight
  • Residency in South Carolina

Job Qualifications

  • Licensed as a commercial pilot and rated for the type of aircraft assigned
  • Possess at least 1,000 hours pilot in command
  • Have 200 hours in the aircraft used by the South Carolina Forestry Commission
  • Have 5 hours in the make and model of aircraft assigned
  • Hold a current Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot certificate with appropriate ratings
  • Hold a current Second Class Medical Certificate and current flight review
  • Ability to obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal
  • Knowledge of flight characteristics and aircraft systems
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations
  • Ability to recognize unsafe flight operations and initiate emergency procedures
  • Effective communication skills

Job Duties

  • Operate single engine aircraft to conduct air operations including aerial detection and support to suppression resources on the ground
  • Obtain aviation weather and monitor fire weather
  • Establish and modify flight routes in coordination with Air Operations Manager, Chief Pilot, and regional staff
  • Coordinate aviation requests and assist scheduling flights for temporary pilots with regional staff and Chief Pilot
  • Schedule flights, provide check rides and evaluate capabilities for current and prospective temporary pilots
  • Perform required training and ensure that aircraft are exercised and maintained in compliance with the Air Operations Manual
  • Maintain flight logs, maintain records, and consolidate aircraft data for reporting
  • Attend coordination meetings with emergency management and other agencies for hurricane response
  • Schedule and provide flights for insect and disease, BMP, storm damage, evacuation assistance and other non-fire missions ensuring non-fire flights do not exceed 10% of monthly flight time
  • Perform other duties as required in support of the Commission's mission and strategic plan
