Job Requirements

  • Completion of a State approved Nursing Assistant training program or equivalent education or experience
  • Valid American Heart Association Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification obtained within 60 days of employment and maintained thereafter
  • Meet all health requirements set by Kern Medical Center
  • Maintain any required certificates of competency depending on assignment
  • Ability to stand, bend, squat, kneel, push, and pull throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift or support patients during transfer
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License if driving is required
  • Adherence to Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy
  • Background check clearance if applicable
  • Willingness to serve as a Disaster Service Worker in emergencies

Job Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a State of California Department of Health Services approved Nursing Assistant training program or one year of an education program leading to an Associate's or Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, or two years experience as a Nursing Attendant in an acute care or skilled nursing facility
  • Knowledge of basic nursing care and techniques
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and metric measurement
  • Ability to perform basic nursing care
  • Ability to read and record medical terminology and metric measurement
  • Ability to maintain medical records
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain effective relations with medical staff and the public
  • Physical ability to stand, bend, squat, kneel, push, pull, and lift patients
  • Ability to maintain certification such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and possibly Basic Dysrhythmia certification
  • Must pass a background check if required

Job Duties

  • Assist with patient observation and care
  • Check and record vital signs and pain levels
  • Collect specimens
  • Measure and record intake and output of food and fluids
  • Pass and observe food trays
  • Assist or feed patients
  • Assist patients with personal hygiene and grooming
  • Answer call signals
  • Make beds
  • Clean and care for equipment
  • Adhere to isolation precautions, medical asepsis, and infection control
  • Observe oxygen precautions
  • Transport patients for admission, discharge, and procedures
  • Transport specimens to the lab
  • Perform general clerical duties
  • Operate various office equipment
  • Assist with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients by inputting data into Electronic Medical Record
  • Schedule appointments and follow up on authorizations
  • Answer phones and provide basic information
  • Coordinate delivery of equipment and services for discharged patients
  • Perform other job-related duties as required
