Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Eighteen months of Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Patient Care Assistant experience
  • One year of secretarial or office experience, college or vocational training, or six months of internal cross-training within Houston Methodist
  • Prior healthcare experience and/or medical terminology preferred
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification by American Heart Association required
  • Demonstrates ability to safely perform assigned job tasks
  • Proficient in English language skills necessary for safety and communication
  • Effective communication skills with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers
  • Ability to perform basic patient care activities within defined limits
  • Capable of operating and troubleshooting equipment such as fax, PC, printers, telephones
  • Proficient computer application skills

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Eighteen months of experience as Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Patient Care Assistant
  • One year of secretarial or office experience, college or vocational training, or six months of internal cross-training at Houston Methodist
  • Prior healthcare experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • BLS certification by American Heart Association
  • Demonstrated competency in performing assigned nursing assistant tasks
  • Proficiency in English communication for safety and security purposes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family, and coworkers
  • Skilled in operating and troubleshooting common office equipment
  • Proficient in computer applications relevant to job functions

Job Duties

  • Perform delegated nursing assistant level tasks for assigned patient populations
  • Assist with patient activities of daily living such as elimination, hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and mobility
  • Answer incoming telephone calls for the unit and transfer as appropriate
  • Coordinate with physicians’ offices, bed management, transfer services, and Operations Administrator
  • Document care administered, treatments, and procedures according to policy
  • Pull and print daily reports including shift and charge nurse reports
  • Organize unit workflow, paperwork, and proactively problem-solve
  • Conduct rounding through the unit to check for environmental, equipment, and patient needs
  • Serve as in-house courier for transporting labs and supplies
  • Facilitate patient and family-centered care under the direction of licensed nurses
  • Report observations and patient conditions to licensed staff
  • Provide shift handoff communication at patient bedside
  • Participate in peer-to-peer accountability to improve patient satisfaction and safety
  • Utilize time efficiently between workload periods while assisting coworkers as needed
  • Offer performance improvement solutions and engage in shared governance activities
  • Maintain competency through ongoing skills assessments and training
