Job Requirements

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check
  • Must have a driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards
  • Physical ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions including extremes
  • Willingness to work occasional overtime and weekends
  • Positions requiring CDL must pass a drug test including marijuana
  • Must maintain availability Monday through Friday with some weekend work
  • Ability to perform physical work including climbing, kneeling, and manual dexterity

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED preferred
  • Some general maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, construction trade, or other related manual labor experience
  • Ability to operate various landscape and maintenance equipment
  • Experience in customer service principles
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical documents
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment

Job Duties

  • Perform landscape maintenance and installations
  • Maintain facilities including restrooms and picnic areas
  • Operate landscape tools such as mowers, blowers, weed eaters, and edgers
  • Drive city-owned vehicles and tow trailers
  • Perform maintenance and construction tasks including painting, carpentry, plumbing, welding, and cement finishing
  • Care for natural turf and maintain irrigation systems
  • Communicate effectively with the public about Parks and Recreation Department work
