Job Requirements

  • Physical ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Must work various schedules and locations including emergencies
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Use of common tools, power equipment, and safety gear
  • Valid Florida driver’s license, with ability to obtain a CDL where required
  • Completion of mandatory training for respective job classifications
  • Maintain accurate records and basic math skills
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions
  • Valid Florida Class B CDL with air brake endorsement (for Caretaker I and II)
  • Certifications such as Trenching & Excavation Competent Person and Pest Control license (for Caretaker II)
  • May be required to function outside normal duties during emergencies

Job Qualifications

  • Six months experience in park maintenance or related field as Parks Maintenance Worker I
  • Valid Florida driver's license or ability to obtain one
  • Minimum eighth-grade education and one year experience in grounds maintenance for Parks Caretaker I
  • Valid Florida Class B CDL with air brake endorsement (for Caretaker I and II)
  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum three years’ experience in grounds and park maintenance for Parks Caretaker II
  • Trenching and Excavation Competent Person certification (for Parks Caretaker II)
  • Florida Ornamental and Turf Pest Control license (for Parks Caretaker II)
  • Successful completion of safety/hazard recognition training
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance management systems
  • Ability to operate various grounds maintenance and construction equipment
  • Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions
  • Ability to swim (for some assignments)
  • Leadership and crew supervision skills for Parks Caretaker II

Job Duties

  • Perform a variety of park maintenance work including repair of buildings, tables, and barbeque grills
  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides using hand applicators
  • Install and repair chain link fence
  • Assemble and repair bleachers, picnic tables, and park furnishings
  • Remove litter and empty trash containers
  • Assist in athletic field maintenance and irrigation repairs
  • Perform janitorial tasks
  • Operate various power tools and groundskeeping equipment
  • Perform labor activities such as laying sod, planting trees/plants, fertilizing, trimming, edging, mowing, trash removal
  • Install, repair, and maintain irrigation components
  • Install and repair playground equipment
  • Construct, repair, and maintain bleachers, picnic tables, benches
  • Repair and maintain athletic fields using specialized tools
  • Operate power mowers, saws, concrete mixers, forklifts, tractors, and other grounds maintenance machinery
  • Wash, clean, lubricate, and adjust equipment
  • Prepare athletic fields for league and tournament use
  • Assist in special event preparations
  • Clean park restrooms, pavilions, and picnic facilities
  • Operate heavy construction equipment when needed
  • Perform advanced turf maintenance tasks like chalking, edging, aerating, fertilization, and pesticide application
  • Perform facility safety inspections and maintain chemical inventories
  • Operate various vehicles and heavy-duty equipment including trucks, tractors, loaders, and small machinery
  • Assemble and repair all types of fencing and park furnishings
  • Operate, repair, and install irrigation systems
  • Perform field supervision and lead worker responsibilities
  • May be required to perform additional related duties as assigned
