Job Requirements

  • Any combination of education above high school level and/or 10 years of relevant experience
  • ability to work varied days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
  • current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one
  • readiness to work early mornings or late evenings depending on operational needs
  • ability to report during emergency or inclement weather periods
  • participation in department orientation training
  • possession or ability to obtain nationally accredited certification in Personal Training, Group Fitness Instruction, or Wellness/Nutritional Coaching preferred
  • 5 years or more supervising full-time employees preferred
  • strategic planning and budget oversight experience preferred
  • ability to collaborate and promote teamwork
  • experience with fitness programming and facility operations
  • contract management experience preferred

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, exercise science, business administration, public administration or related field
  • minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in recreation administration, fitness and wellness, or parks administration
  • proven leadership and team management skills
  • experience with budgeting and contract management
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • proficiency in data management software such as PowerBI, Oracle, and InSITE
  • strategic planning expertise
  • ability to develop and implement policies and procedures
  • commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • valid driver’s license

  • develop and approve contracts and service agreements
  • prepare and manage annual operating budgets
  • allocate resources for events and program activities
  • approve revenue procedures and manage expenditures
  • use current trend analysis for program evaluation
  • oversee use of ProCard transactions for unit events
  • submit monthly reports to director and city management
  • manage cost recovery data collection
  • prepare presentations
  • review staff training plans
  • use databases for financial and statistical tracking
  • lead scheduling for events and programs
  • inspect and analyze facilities and programs for quality
  • evaluate content and cost recovery metrics
  • lead department committees and cultural initiatives
  • manage daily operations and emergency response
  • oversee marketing and partnerships
  • submit Capital Improvement Program requests
  • assist with CIP project oversight
