Job Requirements

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and meet Norfolk Airport Authority driving record standards
  • Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility for a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge
  • Education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in relevant fields or combination of experience and education
  • Ability to work rotating 24-hour shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Willingness to work overtime during inclement weather and emergencies
  • Ability to operate airport maintenance and safety equipment including vehicles, snow removal equipment, and pyrotechnics
  • Strong physical ability to perform duties including walking, standing, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Excellent communication skills including FAA radio phraseology
  • Flexibility to learn new skills and perform diverse tasks as needed
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Must meet strict driving record requirements as outlined by Norfolk Airport Authority
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and licensed for at least 3 years
  • Must be able to maintain movement area driver status

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in airport aviation management, public administration or business administration, or equivalent work experience
  • Three years of experience working at a certificated FAA Part 139 airport preferred
  • Strong knowledge of airport operations including vehicular operations, runway/taxiway systems, wildlife hazards, and inclement weather procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Advanced computer skills including use of internet/intranet and specialized software
  • Ability to analyze operational situations and determine appropriate corrective actions
  • Proven ability to maintain professional and effective work relationships
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge
  • Must maintain movement area driver status

Job Duties

  • Ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations pertaining to airport operations
  • Ensure the Airport Certification Manual, Airport Emergency Plan, and the Wildlife Hazard Management Plan manuals remain in compliance as approved
  • Inspect airport facilities including runways, taxiways, ramps, perimeter barriers and buildings, record discrepancies and arrange for corrective actions
  • Continuously patrol and monitor all aspects of airside operations for compliance to airport rules and regulations
  • Integrate the policy and procedures of the Wildlife Mitigation Plan into daily patrol activities and respond to wildlife threats/incidents
  • Monitor the airport for wildlife hazards and take corrective action to harass and deter wildlife habitation using approved techniques
  • Understand how weather conditions affect airport operations and disseminate forecast reports
  • Provide escorts for authorized vehicles in movement/non-movement areas and provide driver’s movement training
  • Evaluate hazards at the airport and communicate effectively to leadership and safety teams
  • Prepare, maintain, and verify records relating to federal compliance and issue Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs)
  • Communicate effectively via radio using FAA approved phraseology
  • Work with Airport Fire, Police, and other personnel to assist with emergencies and high priority events
  • Maintain equipment, tools, vehicles and workspace with professionalism
  • Comply with Employee Policy Manual requirements
  • Use appropriate software applications
  • Perform other duties as assigned and adhere to Authority policies and guidelines
