Job Requirements

  • United States citizenship
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Six months of general experience or one year of related education or specialized training
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, lifting, bending, and wearing personal protective equipment
  • Willingness to undergo annual tuberculosis screening or testing
  • Capability to handle multiple tasks in stressful situations
  • Compliance with VA employment policies
  • Education from accredited institutions as recognized by U.S. Department of Education

Job Qualifications

  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to nursing assistant work
  • Completion of specialized occupation-related training course
  • Ability to provide patient care according to nurse care plans
  • Effective communication skills with patients and health care teams
  • Ability to operate medical equipment such as bladder scan and blood glucose monitoring
  • Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient situations
  • Ability to assist with nursing care under direction of licensed nursing staff
  • Experience as a nursing assistant in an acute care or medical-surgical setting preferred
  • Basic Life Support certification preferred

Job Duties

  • Assist licensed nursing staff with patient care
  • Observe and report changes in patients' physical or emotional status
  • Use medical equipment for diagnostic and treatment procedures
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of nursing care plans
  • Respond to emergent patient care situations and provide basic life support
  • Serve as a preceptor for new nursing assistants
