Job Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree and eight years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience
- Must have a minimum of a First Class Pilot USCG Credential from Newport News Point to James River Bridge
- NNS Apprentice School graduate may be used as equivalent to Bachelor's Degree
- Navy Nuclear Power School graduate may be used as equivalent
- Associate's Degree or formal 2-year program with two years relevant exempt experience or four years relevant non-exempt experience
- Military Paygrade E-5 or above experience qualifying as equivalent
- High School/GED with four years manufacturing, shipbuilding, trades, military or relevant exempt experience
- High School/GED with eight years combined manufacturing, shipbuilding, trades, military or relevant non-exempt experience
- U.S. citizenship required
- Must be able to work shifts

Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Safely and efficiently transfer, move, dock and undock vessels including aircraft carriers, submarines, container ships, tankers, barges, etc.
- Apply adaptive judgment and specialized knowledge to pilot and direct ship movements considering factors such as wind, weather, tides, currents, ship conditions, and pier or dry-dock limitations
- Direct movement and docking of ships that may be damaged or without ship power, coordinating multiple tugboats for maneuvering
- Take command of customer vessels and direct ship crews during docking operations
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with dockmasters, project and trades personnel, ship captains, officers, and agents
- Work collaboratively with docking pilots and tugboat operators through towing companies and the Independent Docking Pilots Association
- Plan and direct docking, undocking, and movement of vessels under construction, repair or overhaul according to all relevant regulations and standards
- Determine and arrange the number of tugboats and manpower required, coordinating contract towing personnel as needed
- Command and navigate ship movements on rivers and waterways, directing helmsmen and ship officers from the bridge
- Direct tugboat crews to rig towlines and maneuver vessels
- Conduct depth soundings on the shipyard waterfront to ensure adequate water depth for vessels
