Job Requirements

  • Graduated from four-year Maritime Academy or College
  • Meet NY HELPS or 55-b/c eligibility
  • Two years experience as third mate or higher for relevant waters
  • Marine engineer qualifications
  • Six years relevant marine inspection or surveyor experience
  • U.S. Coast Guard vessel inspection experience
  • Federal first-class pilot certification
  • Master of 1,600 gross tons certification
  • Valid New York State driver’s license
  • Ability to travel up to 25 percent of the time
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Must be able to work variable hours during peak boating season

Job Qualifications

  • Graduated from a four-year Maritime Academy or College
  • Two years of experience as a third mate or higher for oceans, near coastal, or Great Lakes for unlimited gross tons
  • Marine engineer qualified for unlimited horsepower
  • Six years of experience as marine inspector, accredited marine surveyor, class surveyor (ABS, Lloyd's, NNV), or naval architect
  • Experience inspecting vessels while employed by the U.S. Coast Guard
  • Federal first-class pilot qualification
  • Master of 1,600 gross tons
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access
  • Valid New York State driver’s license
  • Ability to travel extensively and work variable hours as needed

Job Duties

  • Conduct thorough inspections of Public Vessels according to Bureau procedures and New York State laws
  • Administer written and practical exams to license prospective boat operators
  • Assist with the development and delivery of Marine Law Enforcement Training programs statewide
  • Develop Public Service Announcements and represent the agency at boat shows and boating events
  • Develop printed materials and assist in teaching New York State Safe Boating Courses
  • Assist with issuing permits for regattas and floating objects, review applications, update databases, and collaborate with law enforcement to ensure public safety
  • Collect and review recreational boating incident data and compile the Annual Boating Report
  • Review and process Hull Identification Number applications and issue HINs according to Bureau procedures
